On Sept. 19, 2022, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Board of Directors approved a resolution to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day as a new, official tribal holiday for all of Sault Tribe effective Oct. 10, 2022. In June 2016, the board resolved to change the name of the national holiday observed on the second Monday of October from Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day.

This year, Indigenous Peoples Day is Oct. 10. Tribal government offices and health clinics will be closed that Monday.

Indigenous people across the nation know that we have occupied the Americas untold millennia before Christopher Columbus sailed. To set the record straight and to respect the cultures, languages and traditional life ways of the Indigenous of the Americas, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians urges the cities of Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace, and communities throughout the state of Michigan, to officially recognize it as well.
