Hope Not Handcuffs Angel Training July 20, 6 p.m., Smart Zone (EDC) Building on Meridian in Sault Ste. Marie.

Hope Not Handcuffs, an initiative of Families Against Narcotics, has now helped more than 4300 people who were struggling with addiction find the resources and help they needed and deserved.

The angel training is for volunteers who can help someone who shows up at one of the Police Departments wanting help for substance use problem. When they show up and ask for help, the police department calls an angel coordinator who then calls a volunteer. The volunteer will go to help the person do the necessary paperwork to get him/her into treatment. The training explains how to do the paperwork, explains how to contact the necessary resources to get treatment (depending sometimes on whether the person has insurance or not), and goes over how to make the person feel you care about them and want to help them get the help they need. We then try to get them to a facility right then and there if possible. We hope to have a peer recovery coach available as well.
