Family fun in Sault Ste. Marie June 30 and July 1—two days, eight major events and much more!

Soo Locks Engineers Day
A Michigan landmark opens its doors to the public when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hosts the annual Soo Locks Engineers Day on Friday, June 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day celebrates the engineers who built the Soo Locks along with the men and women of the past and present who maintain the Locks.

The Corps of Engineers invites people of all ages to explore Soo Locks and enjoy the rare opportunity to walk across the lock walls, which make it possible for freighters to navigate the 21-foot drop between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. To gain a real understanding of how this engineering marvel works, only a visit will do.

Cloverland Electric Cooperative hydroelectric plant open house
Cloverland Electric Cooperative hydroelectric plant open house is on June 30 at 725 E. Portage Ave. in Sault Ste. Marie from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In celebration of Soo Locks Engineer’s Day, Coverland Electric Cooperative hosts a public open house at the hydroelectric plant from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free fun for the whole family. Self-guided tours, free hot dogs, hotline safety demonstrations, tour the LSSU Aquatic Research Lab, prize drawings and giveaways, displays and artifacts, video presentation, tools of the trade exhibit and more.

Tour this fascinat¬ing facility housed in the Cloverland Hydro¬electric Plant from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

U.S. Coast Guard Station open house
The 2017 United States Coast Guard Station open house and rescue demonstration is on June 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Coast Guard Station, on Water Street in Sault Sainte Marie.

Explore the station and the USCGC BISCAYNE BAY. Additionally, watch a Coast Guard rescue demonstration, helicopters and more! Join us for this informative event.

City Hall and Water Street Arts & Crafts Fair and tour
Arts, Crafts, and Family Fun Fair June 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Want to take home a souvenir, snack on local¬ly-made goodies, or add a new piece to your art collection? There’s something for everyone at this outdoor fair. Cultural Diversity Celebration 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

Historic Homes along Water Street Noon–5 p.m.

Slashin' Ashmun on June 30
This event is far more than just a car show! Slashin' Ashmun is a throwback to the 1970s, when young adults would cruise the circuit through downtown Sault Ste. Marie to see who’s out. This two-hour block of cruising is an opportunity for the young at heart to relive their youth. Join over 200 vehicles as they drive up and down Ashmun Street from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on June 30! There is no cost to participate.

Soo Ultimate Paddle Day on July 1
The Chippewa County Community Foundation invites you to join us for the first Soo Ultimate Paddle Day! This event consists of paddling races, a fishing derby, guided tours, food and fun. Float the St. Marys River with us on July 1 at Rotary Park on Riverside Drive in Sault Ste. Marie!

2017 Great Race - Day 8 Finish July 1
Come to downtown Ashmun Street in Sault Ste. Marie from 4 to 8 p.m. to welcome the racers of these antique, vintage vehicles as they cross into the Soo as part of their Florida to Michigan (2,000+ miles) endurance road rally. Meet the racers and check out the cars!
